Spotlighting my Whimsical Folk Art!

Morning Ya'll,

I hope that this Hump Day h as started off just right for you. I'm up early as usual....enjoyed a wonderful cup of Java on the front porch in my rocking chair....and wondering what to do today...

As, most of you know, I recently moved into a wonderful new community....so, there has been unpacking boxes, hanging my art work, rearranging furniture to get it just right....and I now have the time to start on new paintings! Yea! So, I thought for some of my newest Followers I would go back and Spotlight some of my previous past whimsical folk art.

I've stated before, that at first when I started painting, I didn't consider myself a artist. I mean I use to couldn't draw a straight line, but, then all of a sudden while looking for whimsical art work for my home....I thought, why not create my own...and
Voila I did.....so, before I started on a new painting I thought I would share some from the past I had done. I hope you enjoy!

And my Self Portrait!

And, I can't wait to share with you my newest painting when I finish. Blessings to each......Deborah

Living with Fibromyalgia

Today is a "raining cats and dogs" kind of day here in rural Southern Georgia. It started raining during the night last night and hasn't stopped yet.....rain is supposed to fall for the next 24 hours. Flood watches are in effect from the Golden Isles of Georgia inland to, well, most of the state. As much as our land down here needs the rain for decreasing the high fire levels that we live with all the time, this rain has played havoc with my body.

Living with metal in my body and lot's of it isn't always fun. When the frigid winds of Winter come a blowing, I hurt. I can feel every screw, metal plate in my body. Feel like the Tin Man needing to carry a"oil can" around.....and when the rain comes for this amount of time, well, the same thing happens.

And, on top of everything else, I have Fibromyalgia! Wikipedia describes Fibromyalgia as:Fibromyalgia (FM or FMS) is a medical disorder characterized by chronic widespread pain and allodynia (a heightened and painful response to pressure).[1] Fibromyalgia symptoms are not restricted to pain, leading to the use of the alternative term fibromyalgia syndrome for the condition. Other symptoms include debilitating fatiguesleep disturbance, and joint stiffness. Some patients[2] also report difficulty with swallowing,[3] bowel and bladder abnormalities,[4] numbness and tingling,[5] and cognitive dysfunction.[6]Fibromyalgia is frequently comorbid with psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety and stress-related disorders such asposttraumatic stress disorder.[7][8] Not all fibromyalgia patients experience all associated symptoms.[9] Fibromyalgia is estimated to affect 2–4% of the population,[7] with a female to male incidence ratio of approximately 9:1.[10] The term "fibromyalgia" derives from new Latin, fibro-, meaning "fibrous tissues", Greek myo-, "muscle, and Greek algos-, "pain"; thus the term literally means "muscle andconnective tissue pain".

I remember the first time I ever heard of anyone having this, and thinking, how can you hurt when the doctors can't fine anything wrong with you!!! Well, I understand now very well. It is so hard to describe to someone how much pain you are in when outwardly you can't show them a scar, or a injury.....and they look at you like, yea right...it is all in your head.

Yes, I have meds I take for it...along with all the other meds I take for the chronic pain from my disabilities.....but, I hate taking medications.....I hate to admit it, but it makes me feel weak. But, I keep on keeping on....dealing with the pain....because even when the days are so bad, and all I want to do is stay in bed....I don't....very seldom, because I feel I do have so much to live for.

So, for all of you out there that live with this problem everyday, know you have a "sister" down here in rural Georgia who is "hanging right in there with ya"....

Blessings,
Deborah

Queen of All She Surveys....Whimsy Folk Art!

Greetings Everyone,

Well, it is a rainy night here in Southern Georgia....but, really nice at the same time. I have a wonderful little front porch at my new place and I love sitting outside watching it rain. But, I'm really excited about tomorrow. As, most of you that have been Following me for awhile know that my beloved Daddy is very sick and his health is getting worse every day....although he still knows who we all are, and can still make us laugh....watching our Mom try and take care of him every day breaks my heart.

We have lots of help...aids.....family members....but, seeing her as she watches her husband of almost 58 years slowly slip away...well, it is heart breaking....so, us girls...my sisters and I, with the help of brothers, brothers in law, and sons in laws....are kidnapping Mom tomorrow for a Girls Day....all the guys will watch Daddy while we the daughters,  take Mom, "junkin" and out to eat at Olive Garden....

So, in Honor of My Mom, who CAN DO ANYTHING.....I wanted to share with you my whimsy folk art painting I did of her.....she is Queen of all she surveys while still getting everything done...
I hope you enjoy it....

Blessings,
Deborah

She can sweep and mop the floors, and can hang the clothes on the line..
And, can still look Beautiful as she does it!

I Love Old Windows!

I love old vintage wooden windows! Years ago, way before I even thought about making jewelry, crafting, or teaching myself how to paint, I would go to art shows, craft shows, and I was always drawn to the booths that had paintings on old, wooden, vintage windows. I would stand and look at them and think, Oh, I wish I could do that! Or, how talented that person was....or, how I wish I could afford to buy one.

Of course, the artist who had painted on these were true artists and their paintings were magnificent! But, then one day after my "crafting journey" had begun and I was slowly realizing that I did have a "talented bone in my body" I bought a old window. I had created a "cartoon character" of myself....a little short, chunky, red haired woman called Ms. Lucy....and yes, I'm short, chunky, red haired woman...lol

Anyway, I decided to draw her on a window, and it turned out pretty good, if I say so myself....and now almost two years later, I've painted several....so, I decided I would share some of them with you....now, I'm self taught....my paintings will never be in a museum....but, I love doing them...

I hope you enjoy them.

Blessings,
Deborah

Southerns know what a Grease Can is!!

Good Saturday Morning everyone,

Well, I have no pretty crafts to show you, or a new whimsical painting...but, I do have a story of memories...

So, the other night my wonderful neighbor, Ms. Flo, and I were sitting on our shared porch talking and sharing stories from our past....now, you have to understand...Ms. Flo is an elderly African American woman, and I'm a middle aged White woman....and we are sitting out there in our rocking chairs...yes, I have a rocking chair....and we are laughing and giggling like we were both little girls....and I'm sure as our neighbors looked at us, we made an unusual sight! But, let me tell you, I have found a "kindred soul sister" with her....I just adore her!

Also, she was raised in an area of Florida that my Mother, Katy is from....I started out the conversation asking her if she remembered a place that my Mother had asked me to ask her about...so, she is telling me about how much the area had changed....and SOMEHOW, we got to talking about our grandmother and their cooking! AND, somehow, a "grease can" was mentioned...OMG...did the laughs start then!!!

If you are from the South, you probably remember your grandmother and maybe your mother having a greasy, used cardboard Crisco "can" sitting beside the stove! Right, I know you remember! It would be soggy and squishy, and it smelled....but, oh how my grandmother and mother would use that oil over and over again. And it didn't matter what they were cooking, they used that oil.....if it was a cake that required some oil...well, you dipped in and got a spoonful of that greasy oil!!!

And, you could always tell when they were cooking, even if you were outside, cause you could smell that old grease getting hot!! Oh Lord, Ms. Flo and I laughed til we cried! It is a miracle that all of us"southerners" that were raised with a grease can in the kitchen didn't die from poisoning!!! So, for you folks that didn't have a "grease can in the kitchen"...here's what they looked like....
The "beloved Crisco grease can"

Fancy metal grease can

So, for all you Ms. Flo's, Granny Minchews, Grandmother Duffy's.....I Salute the "beloved grease cans"....

Blessings to all,
Deborah

My Beautiful 7 Week Old Grandson!

Good Tuesday Morning,

Wow, what a wonderful weekend I had! As most of you know, I became a grandmother for the 2nd time in December when my oldest daughter, Brooke, had her first child and my first grandson. I was there when he was born and stayed with them for 17 days after he was born. Amazing!!

So, it was with much excitement for the entire family when my daughter and husband and son all came to our home town in Georgia for the first time. It was especially exciting for my Mom and Dad as they had not been able to see him since his birth. Both of my parents, Brooke's grand parents and baby Alan's great grandparents are elderly, but, my father is disabled and can not travel anymore....so, they were waiting to see this great grandson.

They arrived on Friday and stayed at my parents home until yesterday....my mother, who the great grandchildren call GG got lots of "sugar" and my father who is called GDaddy was enamoured with him. It was heart warming and sad at the same time, as my daddy sometimes doesn't realize he isn't going to be "well" again....and of course when he said..."just wait til he is 2 or 3 years old and I will teach him how to hunt and fish"...well, our hearts broke but swelled at the same time.

I will be posting more pics later, but I wanted to share a few pics of Alan first:
He was laughing at his Mom

So Precious!

I feel so Blessed.....I have two beautiful grandchildren....One of each...and that's enough to buy for at Christmas!!

Blessings,
Deborah

So, I wanted to share with you my newest folk art painting that I'm calling Speak the Truth.......and is my Valentine to myself! Hey, we should do that...right? We have to treat ourselves.....I took several ideas and made this painting my own....I hope you like it.

Super Easy Peasy Super Bowl Brunswick Stew!

Okay, my teams aren't playing in the Super Bowl today.....I love my Falcons....the "Dirty Birds" did real good this year.....and I can't help it....I love the Saints!!! Fell in love with them when they played in the Super Bowl right after Hurricane Katrina! But, I do love me some FOOTBALL....

Soooooo, as I was sitting here this morning thinking about what I could cook to enjoy in my new little place for my 1 Super Bowl....I decided on Katy's Easy Brunswick Stew! Katy, being my Mother is the Best Cook ever, but as she has gotten older and alot of her time is taken up caring for my Daddy...she has learned and taught us new easy recipes...and one of my Favs is her Brunswick Stew....

All you need is from the meat section of the store, the little containers of the already prepared barbecue chicken and pork....use both if you like both in your Brunswick Stew. Today I used the barbecue pork.
Dump that in a big pot on stove....then take one can of corn and one can of lima beans....do not pour out juice from cans...dump that in also.....then take chicken broth and pour until over all this and stir...I added enough of the chicken broth to cover all the ingredients and turn on simmer.

I let this cook for hours on simmer and then turn up to low after about 3 hours.....of course you can make a large batch of this as we usually do, but for me....I made a small batch.....it is sooooo simple and so delicious that no one will know that you just through it together in a snap!

I have also made a small batch of homemade cornbread for myself which is sumptuous along with the stew...I dipped some up just so I could show ya'll what it looked like....I also added a small can of tomatoes....this is a recipe that you can make your own! Enjoy Katy's Easy Peasy Brunswick Stew.

Blessings, Deborah
